QUARTERLY PRODUCE REVIEW LATE SUMMER 2011
POTATOES: This has been a very difficult Season with low crop yields and strong demand from Europe and the UK's potato processors pushing wholesale prices higher than ever seen before. With the recent better weather conditions the prospect of a bumper crop of UK potatoes this year is looking good. New Season potatoes now available are washed and unwashed whites, washed and unwashed reds, washed potatoes are about £2 a 25kg bag higher in price than the unwashed, Maris Piper best for roasting and chips, Ambo similar to King Edwards, Lovers a speciality Maris Piper packed in 20kg bags
New English mid potatoes have replaced the Imported crops and they are eating well. French red and white mids are available
SALADS: Now mainly grown in the UK as a result prices are lower and quality better than imported product.
This year we are mainly using fancy lettuce from Kent and Dorset growers and so far quality has been very good.
With two large English tomato growers having ceased production of round tomatoes there are more tomatoes arriving from Jersey this year, these have a good flavor and we will supply them when available, this will be mainly round, beef and vine.
We can supply the full range of micro herbs subject to availability.
FRUIT: Peaches nectarines are in good supply, plums English and Imported, apricots, greengages, cherries (now high in price), and rhubarb are now available. Melons are in full season. Apples and pears are now English and European and prices have started to fall. There is a good selection of UK and Imported berries.
PAR-FRY CHIPS: With the potato processors paying very high prices for raw product prices for frozen chips have increased, many customers have changed to par fry and found with savings in energy and cooking oil due to shorter cooking times par fry are better value, some have said that due to favorable customer feedback they will not be changing back to frozen !
